Grandpa Gazillion's Number Yard by Laurie Keller

The local library allows books to be checked out for weeks, therefore my girls and I go to the library about every three weeks. The girls load up on children's books, then we read a couple a night before bed. Last night we read Grandpa Gazillion's Number Yard by Laurie Keller.

This is a basic counting book with a Dr. Seuss type silly rhyme word feel. The book counts from 1 to 20 and the focus is on the shape of the numbers and how they can be used for various things in "everyday life" like the number three can be used for a camel saddle, or the number 12 can be used as ear plugs. It was a silly read, but fun, and I think the kids enjoyed it.

One of the features of the book: besides the main text of the book, there is little text on each page (e.g. one of the illustrated characters on a page has a speech bubble saying, "We'll be done in just a few days, sir!"). I think the kids really enjoy this, but I hate stopping the flow of the book to read all the little text on a page. This book didn't have too much of it, and it didn't interrupt the flow all that bad. I guess I should just enjoy it because the girls enjoy it, but the reality is, I will sometimes tell the girls to get another book from the pile if the one they chose has too much of the little text.

The book can be purchased from Amazon.com here.
